The Inspiration

The heating system was installed in Hereford Cathedral in 1867. Its form of repeating fins inspired this collection and led to an investigation into the ideas of comfort and discomfort, comparing life in the 11th and 12th centuries when the cathedral was built, and life in Victorian England.

The Collection

Rings are one of the most important pieces of jewellery worn in medieval Britain and their signifance increase as the become symbols of betrothal, marriage and belonging.

The ring is also an intimate piece of jewellery, worn on a part of the body which is constantly moving and performing intricate tasks. The idea of a ring which is challenging to wear is the result of this project, made as a tryptych in deference to the inspiration for this project within the cathedral.

Out of this research and interrogation of materials came much learning. The pieces in this collection were complex to make but seeing them finished was very satisfying.
