Nature-Inspired Sculptural Jewellery: A Tribute to Friluftsliv
This project was inspired by the Scandinavian idea of Friluftsliv, the Scandinavian philosophy of ‘Free-Air-Life’. Rooted in Norway’s deep cultural connection with nature, this philosophy encourages a life lived in harmony with nature, with being outdoors and emphasising growth through nature’s influence.
For this project, I created a stylized leaf shape, translating it into a sculptural bangle made from natural wood. This wood has been lime washed and waxed, to let the natural beauty of the wood shine through.
This was my first project at art college, and looking back, I can see the early foundations of my love for sculptural jewellery and the use of repeating forms—a theme that continues to shape my work today.

A Design in progress

Testing ideas in paper

Making Tools
These blocks were used to shape each wooden element before the final bangle was riveted together

Exploring Finishes
Playing with the finish on each leaf shape - I was exploring the idea of adding colour and pattern to the finished bangle but instead I decided to let the natural wood shine on its own.
